Lighting for camera: why the room looks bright and the stream looks dull.

A camera needs more, softer, better-placed light than a human eye. The three-point setup, colour temperature, and the fixes for the problems you'll actually see.

Human eyes are extraordinary at coping with bad light. Cameras aren't. A conference room that feels bright can produce a stream where the presenter is a dark shape against a burnt-out window. Lighting for camera is a discipline of its own, but the principles are learnable and most of the impact comes from a handful of decisions.

Key, fill and back: the three-point setup

The key is the main light on the presenter's face, placed off to one side at roughly 45 degrees and above eye level, so the face has shape. The fill is a softer light on the other side that lifts the shadows the key creates — how much fill decides how dramatic or flat the face looks. The back light (or hair light) comes from behind and above, catching the shoulders and hair and separating the presenter from the background. Miss the back light and presenters merge into the set; it's the light most people forget and the one that most looks "professional".

Soft light is kind light

Large, diffused sources — softboxes, LED panels through diffusion, bounced light — produce gentle shadows and flatter faces. Small hard sources produce sharp shadows, shiny foreheads and squinting. On a stream, softness is almost always right for the key and fill; a harder back light adds sparkle.

Colour temperature: pick one and stick to it

Daylight is bluish (around 5600K); tungsten and many venue lights are warm (around 3200K); office fluorescents are somewhere unpleasant in between. Mixed sources give a presenter a blue face on one side and an orange one on the other, and no camera setting fixes it. Choose a temperature, set all your fixtures to it, kill or gel the room lights you can't control, and white-balance the cameras to match.

Light the background separately

The "broadcast look" is a presenter lit for the face and a background lit for mood, independently. That's what makes coloured washes on a set work — the presenter stays natural while the wall goes brand-teal. It requires the separation described in set design and a few extra fixtures aimed only at the set.

Screens, windows and the exposure fight

Anything self-luminous — an LED wall, a monitor, a window — is fighting the presenter for exposure. The camera can only expose for one. The fix is to bring the presenter's light level up to meet the screen, turn the screen's brightness down to meet the presenter, or both. For windows: blinds, or place the presenter so the window is the key light rather than the background.

Fixtures for events

Bi-colour LED panels are the event workhorse: adjustable colour temperature, dimmable, cool-running, battery-capable. Fresnels and stage fixtures are for larger stages. RGB tube lights and pixel bars have made coloured set lighting cheap and quick. What matters more than the brand is having enough of them and someone who knows where to put them.
